This sphere idea
originated in my Large
Scale Y-Wing as an alternative to the then lack of white 6x6
sphere canopies. I was pretty happy with the result so later tried
to make an entire sphere based off of it. It has a 4x4x4 stud "core"
with studs on the ends allowing six identical sides to fit on. I've
since converted it into a Small
Scale Death Star, and have plans for a Union 76 station.

The LEGO Model Designers at LEGOLAND California
liked my design so much that a new Miniland figure features this
